school teacher’s account of the conditions
at the schools
Tinatin Machahkalaze (28) teaches at a small school in the remotely situated village Tlugi in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia.
For nearly five years, she has been teaching children aged 6-7, corresponding to the 1st and 2nd grades.
“When I started teaching here, there were no doors in the building, and because of the noise coming from outside it was almost impossible to teach. Besides, it was difficult to heat the classroom sufficiently,” Tinatin Machahkalaze says and continues:
”Since 1993, doors have been at the top of our wish list, but the governor never responded to our request. We are extremely pleased that Fair Trees saw to it that we had doors at our school – as a step towards ensuring the children get proper schooling. I, too, have a boy aged two, who will be attending this school when he gets older. I am particularly pleased that the special Fund grants medical attention to my boy as well as all the other children in the region.”
At the same time, she is happy that the school yard has been fenced in.
“The fence that used to surround the school yard was in such a bad condition that the pigs could enter through it. Now the children can play freely and undisturbed.”
