Generally called Ambrolauri, the whole region is officially called Racha-Lechkhumi.
With a total area of 4954 km² it represents about 7% of the total area of the state of Georgia. Yet with its population of some 15,300 just 0.3% of Georgia's 4.64 million inhabitants occupy this beautiful but mountainous and isolated part of the country.
The total number of villages and populated places in the region is recorded at 256, with the town of Ambrolauri –the largest urban settlement – as the official administrative centre for the region.
